After summer‘s break in the 17th round of A league, FC Stumbras had to play with champion Žalgiris away just a couple of days after Vilnius team Champions league dream finished.

It was one of the most dangerous A league players Darvydas Šernas who scored from very tight angle on 32th minute to give Žalgiris lead 1:0 in the first half.

Stumbras kept alive their hopes of upsetting FC Žalgiris until the very last seconds of the game but the final result was upsetting – 0:1.

However Stumbras showed fighters mentality and good football. Mariano Barreto‘s team created more chances, were not afraid to press Žalgiris most of the time and was simply unlucky wasting many goal scoring opportunities.

During the match visitors hit the post, missed easy goal with the head when the goal was completely empty and blew away several more fantastic chances.

„If someone deserves to win tonight it was not Žalgiris but Stumbras. We were a better team. When you make eight shots in the second half alone and you can‘t score of course it‘s disappointing. However we were not afraid to play, we pressed them, created many chances. Only few teams in Lithuania can play like this away with Žalgiris“ – Mariano Barreto spoke to the media after the game.
